Harbourfront Toronto opened a competition for public art to honour first nations and pay homage to their rich history. Jay Havens, as an indigenous artist entered the design for an interpretation of the peace canoe into the competition and won!
To bring an artists vision to life and be a part of something very special.
The Method: A steel skeleton was built to give the canoe weight and stability. Foam blocks were clad around the skeleton and then carved by hand, epoxy hard coated and then the mirror plates were attached using marine grade epoxy adhesive. Regular float tests were completed throughout the process. We then transported the canoe to the Harbourfront where a boat and scuba divers took care of the final installation.
